Cd’A looking to form coed

grade 6-12 mountain bike team

COEUR d’ALENE — A meeting regarding starting grade 6-12 coed mountain bike team is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Library, 702 Front St.

Organizers plan to form a composite team of riders from various school ages in Kootenai County to compete in the Washington School Mountain Bike League as the “Kootenai Idaho Composite Team”. The Washington program has been going for a few years; its webpage is www.washingtonleague.org.

The season runs from January to June. It is considered a club sport. Riders, teams, and coaches “pay to play” and thus insure themselves. There are four races scheduled this spring on weekends and will be located between Spokane and Seattle. Several bike shops will play sponsor roles by assisting at races, transporting bikes, and covering some of the fees, etc.

Spokane has three different composite teams (essentially a north, south and central team). Each team includes two high schools and several middle schools. Kootenai County would likely have one composite team this year. The races include varsity and junior varsity for girls and boys starting with sixth-graders up to the high schoolers. Races are scored like cross country, where low team score wins.
