Shem Hanks, a resident of Kootenai County for more than 20 years, announced he is seeking election to the Idaho State Legislature.

Hanks, 26, will run in the May 15 Democratic primary for seat 4B in the Idaho House of Representatives. If he receives the party’s primary nomination, he will be on the ballot in November.

“I was raised in a double-wide trailer in Hayden, Idaho. It was in this humble environment where my parents instilled in me values of faith, hard work, honesty, social justice and equal opportunity for success,” Hanks said, in a news release.

Hanks, of Coeur d’Alene, just finished serving a term as president of the Democratic Club and is vice president of the Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee. A high school graduate of Christian Center School in Hayden, Hanks went on to Eastern Washington University, where he graduated with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in history.

He works closely with college students through his job at Northwest College Support.

“Instead of students dropping out for financial reasons or graduating with a mountain of debt, we have to make an investment in Idaho’s future,” Hanks said.

Republican Paul Amador currently represents District 4 in Idaho House seat 4B.
