Albert Henry Brothers, 83

Albert was born June 26, 1934 in a farm house on the corner of Bodine and Chase roads in Post Falls, Idaho. Heaven’s gates opened for Bert on Jan. 26, 2018 at 5 p.m. His wife, Peggy and son, Allen, were by his side and said goodbye to him as he went to the other room, as he would say. He was in compassionate care at the Schneidmiller Hospice House.

Albert grew up in Post Falls before there were paved streets, traffic lights, and highway 91 was where Seltice is today. He so loved the history of his beloved hometown. As a child he would swim in the river, and loved hiking in the area of the third channel. He talked of riding an inner tube down the irrigation ditch almost to the Spokane Valley, catching a ride to Coeur d’Alene to spend the day at Playland Pier, or seeing a movie at the Wilma Theater before catching a ride home before dinner. It was a good childhood.

When he finished school, he helped his dad with the fruit stand and gas station. He also worked at their little grocery store where he found his favorite drink, Mountain Dew, and earned his nickname, “Twinkie Kid.” When the opportunity arrived he went to work setting pins at a bowling alley in the Spokane Valley. Albert worked construction at Fairchild Air Force Base and worked for the railroad as a gandy dancer before going to work at Idaho Veneer Company. He was a dryer feeder for 40 years until he had to give it up and take disability due to his failing eyesight in 1994. The Malloys were great people to work for.

Albert met the love of his life, Peggy, in 1961 and they were married three months later. They would have celebrated 58 years together this year.

Albert was a Lions Club member for more than 50 years, received many awards for his help, and was given a lifetime membership. Albert enjoyed lending a hand whenever he could, shucking corn for the fair, collecting donations for the building of the pavilion at the city park, and the haunted house.

He was a father for all seasons, from the time he coaxed his son into unlocking the pickup door when he had locked him out, to making a “fast” trip to the Apple Blossom parade when his daughter had missed the bus. She got there in time to march in the parade and Bert was the hero of the day.

Albert is survived by his wife, Peggy; children, Yvonne Dunning of Moraga, Calif. and son, Allen Brothers of Post Falls; grandchildren, Eric and Amanda Dunning of California; many nieces and nephews, great-great and great. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leona and WD Brothers; three half-brothers; four sisters and four brothers.

Albert enjoyed being outdoors in the summer sun with his family and friends for celebrations, so that is what we are planning for his Celebration of Life, happening from noon to 5 p.m. on June 23, 2018, at Q’emiln Park, Post Falls.
