SPOKANE — Sandpoint bowed out of the Eagle Holiday Classic with a 65-36 loss to the Blackhawks at West Valley High.

“The score didn’t turn out the way that we wanted or the way we’re capable of playing,” Sandpoint head coach Will Love said. “But on the other hand we have to look at other lessons that we have to learn from this. We’re trying to make everything with this young group a learning experience, and one of those things is that we have to figure out our approach for back-to-back games.”

Another slow start plagued the Bulldogs and snowballed into their largest defeat of the year, mostly in part to Cheney’s ball movement, reliance on transition scoring and junior guard Maggie Smith’s game-high 15 points. All nine Cheney players who saw the floor scored at least two points.

“One of the things the girls are struggling with right now is their defensive assignments,” Love said. “That falls on me. We have to practice that because we have a hard time finding out who guards who in transition, then if we stop the ball, how we rotate. Those are a few of the things we’re going to work on between now and the next game.”

The Bulldogs led for one minute and 27 seconds, then the Blackhawks rattled off a 14-1 run to gain separation in the first quarter. Dawson Driggs (12 points, six rebounds) and Hattie Larson (11 points, four rebounds and seven steals) tried pulling the Bulldogs closer in the second, but Cheney’s lead proved to be insurmountable.

Sandpoint (2-9) will host West Valley of Spokane on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Timberlake 65

Medical Lake 35

SPOKANE — A surge of energy from both the starters and reserve players, along with a career-high scoring night from senior Karissa Willis, helped Timberlake rebound from a tough loss as it won convincingly in its Eagle Holiday Classic finale at West Valley High.

“The biggest difference tonight was the kids played with a lot of energy,” Tigers coach Matt Miller said. “We made shots, and if they made a couple mistakes or missed some shots, they didn’t let it get to them.”

Willis sank five 3-pointers to tally her career-best 15 points, and she was one of three Timberlake players in double-figures. Taryn Soumas (18 points) and Brooke Jessen (17 points) combined to score as many points as the entire Medical Lake team.

Lexie Redell led the Cardinals with 16 points.

Timberlake (11-2) hosts Bonners Ferry on Jan. 8 to begin Intermountain League play.

Shadle Park 65

Sandpoint 50

SPOKANE — Sandpoint’s five-game winning streak came to an end against Shadle Park on the last day of the Eagle Holiday Classic held at West Valley High School.

The Highlanders (7-3) used a 17-point, first-half effort from Eastern Washington commit Jake Groves in order to pull away with the 65-50 win.

“I actually thought we played a much better game today than we did yesterday (against Davenport), even though we ended up with a win,” Sandpoint head coach Wade Engelson said. “The score was not indicative of how close the game was.”

Sandpoint (5-4) hung with the more athletic, experienced Highlanders for the first quarter before its offense stalled. Kobe Banks’ four-point play to put the Bulldogs on the board sparked a big performance from the junior; Banks led the Bulldogs with 17 points on 4-11 shooting from beyond the arc. Yet the rest of the Bulldogs struggled on offense. As a team, Sandpoint struggled to score inside: Usual offensive stalwarts Alex Stockton and Ryan Roos were held to eight points apiece.

“We got really good looks and the shots just didn’t fall for us,” Engelson said. “And (Shadle Park) is a good team. If you’re not making shots, then they’re going to get the ball and make theirs.”

Shadle Park, which features nine seniors on its roster, found its open shooters throughout the contest. Aside from Groves’ 24 points, the Highlanders also had help from Armani Luna, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half.

Sandpoint senior guard Bruin Jones led his teammates with three assists, Brandon Casey grabbed a team-high four rebounds and Will Treadaway came off the bench to add five points, two rebounds and a team-leading three blocks.

Sandpoint will take on West Valley on Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
