Early hole too much for Genesis Prep

SAN DIEGO — In its tournament opener on Wednesday, Genesis Prep dug a hole a little too deep to climb out of.

Playing in the National Bracket of the Holiday Classic, Genesis Prep fell behind tournament host 22-4 after the first quarter of an 85-57 loss.

“They came to play today, and we didn’t,” Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert said. “They’re a good team and ran their stuff really well. They got us out of what we wanted to do, and when you only score four points in the first quarter and give up as many as we did, it’s tough to recover from.”

Jonny Hillman had 19 points and five rebounds and Seth Neely nine points and six rebounds for Genesis Prep (2-3), which resumes tournament play today at 3:50 p.m.

Genesis Prep finished the game with 20 turnovers.

“I liked our effort in the third quarter, and thought we played much better in the third,” Colbert said. “We put ourselves in a deep hole, and just couldn’t dig our way out of it. Against a good time like that, you can’t allow a team to jump on you like that. We didn’t take care of the ball and our defense wasn’t what it needs to be.”

Michael Pope scored 32 points for Torrey Pines.
