Coeur d'Alene falls short in fourth vs. Hellgate

COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene trailed by just one point after three quarters, but managed just seven points in the fourth quarter in a 57-42 loss to the Hellgate Knights of Missoula on Friday night.

Emma Whiteman scored 12 points, Kelly Horning 11 for Coeur d’Alene (4-6).

“Girls played hard but shots wouldn’t fall down the stretch,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Nicole Symons said. “Hellgate’s zone slowed us down and we had a hard time finding gaps.”

Emma Blakely scored 18 points, Kylie Lunday 13 for Hellgate.

Coeur d’Alene plays at the Timber-Lion tournament next Thursday through Saturday in Boise.

SPIRIT LAKE — Brooke Jessen scored all of her game-high 13 points in the first quarter for the Tigers in a win over the Bulldogs.

“We had a really solid first quarter on both ends of the court,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team led 16-2 after the first quarter. “We got some points in transition and looked really solid. The defense on both sides got a lot better in the second half, but we found a way to hang on.”

Taryn Soumas scored 12 points for Timberlake (10-1), which faces St. George’s in the Eagle Holiday Classic next Friday at 8 p.m. at West Valley High in Spokane.

Dawson Driggs and Hattie Larson scored nine points each for Sandpoint (2-7).

RATHDRUM — Katy Ryan had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks, but the visiting Badgers built an 11-point halftime lead and held on for the nonleague win at Hawk Court.

“Defensively we were reactionary instead of being more proactive in the first quarter,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “And we were not very sharp in the second quarter in trying to find some answers. But we played a great third quarter.”

Lauryn Cooper had five assists for Lakeland (4-6), which returns to action next Thursday and Friday at the Eagle Holiday Classic in at West Valley High.

Holly Ansley scored 11 points, Emily Blackmore 10 for Bonners Ferry.

GILBERT, Ariz. — Genesis Prep led by six points after three quarters, but Warren of Downey, Calif., overtook the Jaguars in the fourth en route to victory in the Kirk Pointer Bracket at the Nike Tournament of Champions at Mesquite High.

Bella Murekatete scored 21 points and Rachel Schroeder added 10 for Genesis Prep (3-5), which is 0-3 at the tourney.

“We come to these tournaments to learn and that’s what we did tonight,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said. “I’m proud of how we played and we will make the adjustments to move forward.”

Halle Sii scored 17 points, Aubry Salepaga 15 for Warren.

Genesis Prep concludes play at the tourney today, facing Desert Ridge of Mesa, Ariz., at 1:30 p.m. PST.
