Zags Clarke, Hachimura named to Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason list

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Gonzaga men’s basketball’s Brandon Clarke and Rui Hachimura were named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason list, announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Friday. The award is presented to the national player of the year.

Heading into Friday’s home game vs. Denver, Clarke was averaging 16.8 points, ninth in the West Coast Conference, and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game, which ranks fourth in the conference. His 39 blocks rank third in the country, and his 3.25 blocks per game are fifth in the nation and tops the WCC. The redshirt junior ranks seventh in the nation, shooting 69.5 percent field. He is second in the WCC making 69.6 percent from inside the arc.

Hachimura was averaging a team-high 21.6 points per game. His average ranks seventh in program history for highest scoring average in a season, and the most points per game since Adam Morrison’s 28.1 points per outing in the 2005-06 season. The Toyama, Japan, native ranks third in the conference with 21.6 points per game. He was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Maui Invitational.

Balloting for the USBWA’s All-America Team, All-District Teams and the association’s individual awards will take place in March. The Oscar Robertson Trophy will be presented at a news conference at the Final Four in Minneapolis, Minn.

McGuire rounds out early

signing class for Idaho football

MOSCOW — Idaho’s football team rounded out its class from the early signing period with the addition of Kevin McGuire, head coach Paul Petrino announced Friday.

McGuire is a wide receiver from Los Angeles and Culver City High. He is Idaho’s highest-rated signee since 2010, according to 247Sports’ composite ratings.

The same outlet ranks Idaho’s 2019 class first among all FCS schools at the end of the early signing period.

WSU women’s soccer coach signs contract extension

PULLMAN — Washington State and head women’s soccer coach Todd Shulenberger agreed to a contract extension that will keep the coach on the Palouse through June of 2024.

WSU athletic director Pat Chun officially announced the contract extension for Shulenberger on Friday morning.

In four seasons at WSU, Shulenberger has led the Cougars soccer team to three NCAA appearances.

Bridget Rieken, a senior at Lake City High, has signed to play at WSU next season.
