Tonkin, Soumas lead Timberlake past Lakeland

| December 19, 2018 12:00 AM

RATHDRUM — McKeeley Tonkin scored 19 points and Taryn Soumas added 17 as the visiting Timberlake Tigers broke on top early en route to a 55-41 victory over the Lakeland Hawks in nonleague play Tuesday night at Hawk Court.

“We just had a hard time with dribble penetration,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “They made some pretty tough shots look easy. Their two guards, Tonkin and Soumas, are just tough off the dribble, so you’re kind of picking your poison, staying with the posts or helping.

Brooke Jessen added 14 points for Timberlake (9-1)

“We saw some good things there,” Seymour said. “I think some of us realized at the end we were capable of making it a closer game than it was.”

Lauryn Cooper hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and five rebounds for Lakeland (4-5).

“Lauryn Cooper shot the ball well,” Seymour said. “She’s been passing more than shooting, which we’ve asked her to, and a couple days ago we said we need for you to score some more points, and I thought she competed well.”

Katy Ryan added 10 points and six rebounds for Lakeland.

On Friday, Timberlake plays host to Sandpoint, and Lakeland is home vs. Bonners Ferry.
