Genesis Prep drops opener at Arizona tourney

GILBERT, Ariz. — Liberty, from Hillsboro, Ore., outscored Genesis Prep 26-18 in the third quarter to take the lead en route to a 55-47 victory Wednesday in a first-round game in the Kirk Pointer Bracket of the Nike Tournament of Champions at Mesquite High.

Bella Murekatete led Genesis Prep (3-3) with 20 points, and Rachel Schroeder added 11.

“Today was a great test for our girls,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said. “They stepped up to the challenge and played hard. We had a little trouble getting the ball in the hole during the fourth quarter. Otherwise we played our style of basketball.”

Genesis Prep plays Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas today at noon at Mesquite High.

MOSCOW — The Timberwolves kept within arm’s length until the fourth quarter before falling to the Bears in nonleague play at Bear Den.

Josh Stellflug led Lake City (0-6) with 13 points.

“They play really aggressive defensively,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said of Moscow, “and at times we attacked well. We didn’t shoot well. Nothing was easy.”

Gabe Quinnett and Derek Rauch-Edwards each scored 17 points for Moscow.

Lake City returns to action at the Lake City Invitational next Thursday through Saturday.
