Simpson's double-double leads NIC women to win

COEUR d’ALENE — Former Lake City High standout Keara Simpson had a team-leading 17 points and 11 rebounds as North Idaho College rebounded from a tough overtime loss and defeated South Puget Sound 71-43 on Monday evening in the Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Crossover event at Rolly Williams Court.

The Cardinals (6-2) scored the first seven points of the game, taking a 7-0 lead on Alex Carlton’s 3-pointer. Mikayla Collins finally scored for the Clippers (1-8) midway through the period, but two 3-pointers from Simpson and another from Madison Lommen put the hosts ahead 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. NIC led by double-digits the rest of the way.

Anna Schrade (11 points, three steals) and Lommen (10 points) helped NIC’s bench outscore South Puget Sound’s reserves 26-5. The Cardinals also held the Clippers to 24.1 percent shooting (14-for-58) in the game.

Heidi Sellman added 12 points and Halle Eborall grabbed 11 rebounds for NIC, which faces Bellevue at 1 p.m. today in its final game of the Cardinal Crossover.
