TOTS: A Christmas story

| December 16, 2018 12:00 AM

This is what “Toys for Tots” is all about.

After delivering a bag of toys to a waiting couple, I noticed a lady close to my own age, (mid- to late-60s), and the only one left in the waiting area. Returning to the back to await the next “order,” I soon realized that nobody was filling any orders. “Uh oh!” I thought, “another computer glitch.”

Indeed it was and her order was never printed for fulfillment. By now, having a vested interest, I wanted to fill the order myself. What a surprise! Six children of both sexes throughout the full age range serviced by the Toys for Tots program.

Upon delivering her toys and walking them to her car, I just had to ask, “Please don’t tell me that these are all your children?” “No,” she said, “I am raising my seven grandchildren. And on just my Social Security check.” (We all know that a Social Security check is barely enough for a couple, and certainly not near enough for a family of seven children.)

I was greatly humbled, and in awe. THIS is what the Toys for Tots program is about. To give those children who would not have otherwise, gifts around the Christmas tree on that most special morning in a child’s life.

God bless the United States Marine Corps for running and managing this program. God bless the individuals, commercial stores, and corporate firms who contribute toys and funds that sustain and allow the program to prosper. And God bless the grandparents who, through whatever circumstances, are raising their grandchildren. Not to be forgotten, God bless the children.

If you are inclined, there is a desperate need of toys for older children, at least in the distribution center where I have been a volunteer. There are toys for younger children, but lacking for boys and girls ages 9 through 12. If you are planning on purchasing a toy to contribute to the Toys for Tots program, I implore you to please consider the needs of older children.
