Coeur d'Alene powers past Lewiston

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Nakisha Matheson scored 16 points, one of six players in double-figures for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in a 75-65 win over the Lewiston Bengals in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools at Elmer Jordan Court on Friday.

The win snaps a 24-game losing streak in league for Coeur d’Alene, which outscored Lewiston 40-26 in the second half to pull away.

Coeur d’Alene’s last league win came during the 2013-14 season, beating Post Falls on Jan. 30, 2014.

Kelly Horning, Tori Younker and Emma Whiteman scored 11 points each and Skylar Burke and Jaelyn Brainard-Adams added 10 points for Coeur d’Alene (3-5), which hosts Big Sky High of Missoula on Thursday.

Kendyll Kinzer scored 25 points for Lewiston (3-6).

SPOKANE — Aubrey Avery scored 13 points, Klaire Mitchell 12 points and Brooklyn Rewers 10 points for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Indians.

“We started the game really well and put some good pressure on them,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “Our starting group did a good job getting out to a lead in the first quarter and starting the third quarter. We were able to get the pace of the game going a little higher in the third.”

Lake City (6-2) hosts Sandpoint today at 3:15 p.m.

Kyara Sayers scored 17 points for North Central (5-1).

OROFINO — Kaci Haeg had 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Lumberjacks in a win over the Maniacs in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

“We shot the ball really well tonight,” St. Maries coach John Cordell said. “We were able to get scoring from everyone and got some good looks at the basket.”

Madison Cordell had 12 points, seven assists and two steals for St. Maries (5-3), which hosts the Post Falls JV on Monday.
