Driggs' return sparks Sandpoint

| December 9, 2018 12:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Will Love and the Sandpoint Bulldogs got their first win of the season in a near wire-to-wire 55-29 win over Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

Junior guard Dawson Driggs, who missed the first month of the season with a broken arm, led all scorers with 18 points and tacked on 5 rebounds and 3 assists in her first game of the season.

“[Driggs] showed that she can be an all-league guard tonight,” said Love, who picked up his first head coaching win. “She’s a real swiss-army knife type of player. I’m happy she had the game that she had tonight after being out so long.”

For the first time all season, Sandpoint started the game in a man-to-man defense, which threw Bonners Ferry out of its rhythm early. The Badgers didn’t score their first field goal until Sadie Hill’s 2:02 remaining in the first quarter. At halftime, Driggs handled the Badgers all by herself: The junior had 15 points (on 4-of-5 shooting) to Bonners Ferry’s 14 points on 6-of-25 shooting.

Yet Sandpoint’s win was a team effort. Fellow guard Maddie Morgan added 15 points and Hattie Larson filled the stat sheet once again with a nine-point, six-rebound, three-assist showing. Although her contributions weren’t as apparent in the box score, Love cited junior guard Izzo Edwards’ defense as the catalyst for the run.

“Izzo had an awesome defensive performance tonight,” Love said. “Her defense on [Holly Ansley] really set the tone for us.”

Ansley and Jerzie Pluid each scored eight points for Bonners.

Sandpoint plays host to Priest River on Tuesday. Bonners Ferry (3-1) visits Wallace on Tuesday.

“They were really physical with her again tonight,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “And she just kept trying to stay upright in there and did a good job on the offensive glass. The girls did a good job of penetrating and finding her.”

“They’re good; we made them look really good tonight,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “They dominated us in every facet of the game, let’s not sugar-coat it, and we weren’t up to the challenge tonight.”

“Our ladies fought back hard in the second half to overcome a big deficit,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said. “Gotta give it to them for playing with a lot of heart and finishing strong.
