Timberlake girls pick off another 5A foe

LEWISTON — Taryn Soumas hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 45, then hit another to give 3A Timberlake its first lead of the night with 1:30 remaining in a 49-45 win over the 5A Lewiston Bengals on Thursday at Booth Hall.

“I was really proud that they just kept fighting,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We didn’t play our best on either side of the floor, but they just kept fighting and got it done in the fourth quarter.”

Soumas finished with 16 points, Brooke Jessen 15 points and McKeeley Tonkin 13 points for Timberlake (7-0), which went 5-0 against teams from the 5A Inland Empire League this season.

Lewiston, which scored 18 points in the first quarter, was held to 27 in the final three.

“Defensively, we had a really rough first quarter,” Miller said. “We tightened down after the first quarter. Offensively, we were really passive in the first half, and even the third quarter. But we got more aggressive and made some shots in the fourth quarter.”

Timberlake travels to East Valley on Saturday.

Caitlin Richardson scored 16 points for Lewiston (2-5), which lost to Timberlake 53-39 on Nov. 20 in Spirit Lake.

SPOKANE — Bella Murekatete scored 21 points to lead the Jaguars past the Pirates in nonleague play.

Rachel Schroeder added 15 points for Genesis Prep (3-0), and Emily Martinez added 12.

“Our girls played team ball and didn’t stop ’til the final buzzer sounded,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas. “Every person played a huge role in a nice team win.”

Savanna Wickering led Rogers (0-4) with nine points.

Genesis Prep plays host to Northwest Christian on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Chase Gardom led a balanced attack with 12 points as the Tigers beat the visiting Bulldogs in nonleague play in their second game in two nights.

“The biggest thing we did is, all nine kids contributed,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “Our bench played fantastic, and allowed my starters to be fresh in the fourth quarter.”

Sheldon Kistler added 11 points, Jacob James 10 for Timberlake (2-3), which trailed by six at halftime, but took the lead early in the third quarter, before Sandpoint tied it heading into the fourth.

Kobe Banks, a transfer from Clark Fork, led Sandpoint (0-2) with 13 points, and Bruin Jones added 12.

Timberlake travels to East Valley on Saturday.

MULLAN — Luke Trogden scored 13 points and Riley Trogden added 11 as the Tigers defeated the Timberwolf ‘C’ team at the Mullan Pavilion.

Mullan, which has just five players, got a scare early when Luke Trogden, the freshman point guard, picked up three fouls in the first quarter. But Tigers coach Paul Elston said Trogden managed to not commit a foul the rest of the game.

“He did a great job out there for us, running the point,” Elston said.

Mullan (2-3) has played with just five players all season. Elston is optimistic a sixth player will be eligible in a week or so.

“The kids get a little tired, but they look over at the bench and there’s no other option,” he said.

Kanyon Fitzsimmons led the Lake City ‘C’ team with eight points.

“Lake City moved the ball very well,” Elston said. “They were skipping the ball well, attacking the zone with a pass and then kicking it out. I was impressed — for a ‘C’ team, they’ve got some kids that can really play.”

Mullan returns to action next Thursday at home vs. Clark Fork (Mont.), a co-op between Superior and Alberton.
