Alice Sylte, 97

Alice Mary Sylte, age 97, formerly of Rathdrum, Idaho, died Dec. 2, 2018, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Hauser Lake, Idaho, to William and Mary (Shepherd) Howell. She grew up and graduated high school in Rathdrum.

Alice was married to Vernon Sylte on Oct. 3, 1941, in Coeur d’Alene. Following Vernon’s military service in World War II, they made their home in Rathdrum. Vernon’s teaching career spanned 28 years and during the summer months, Alice worked side by side with her husband building many homes in Rathdrum.

During their retirement years they enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling to Hawaii and spending winters in Yuma, Ariz. They moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1993. Vernon preceded her in death in 2015. During their 74 years of marriage they enjoyed doing everything together, experiencing their love of the outdoors and their family and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Millie Sloan and Agnes Howell; and a brother, Frank Howell. She is survived by her son, Gary (Jan) Sylte; her daughter, Linda (Gary Retter) Yates; her brother, Arthur Howell; grandchildren, Traci Sylte, Troy Sylte and Eli Yates; great-grandchildren, Becca, Ava, Ashley, Reed, Tavin and Ella; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at the Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel. Burial will be at the Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum. Please visit Alice’s online memorial and sign her guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com
