Lake City's Hughes a winner in Montana

PABLO, Mont. — With the spotlight on him, Owen Hughes shined for Lake City to win the 285-pound bracket at the Owen Invitational at Salish Kootenai College.

Hughes beat Wacey Zuback of Browning 4-2 in overtime in the championship match for Lake City, which finished runner-up to Polson by a 202-201 margin.

“The kids wrestled their butts off,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “We won matches we were down, and got pins when we were up. It was really encouraging to see for the start of the season.”

Other Lake City placers included: Caden Hess (113 pounds, second), Devin Sorrell (120, third), Ricky Thomas (132, fifth), Porter Howard (152, sixth), Seth Nutting (160, fourth), Elijah Mills (170, fourth), Matthew Whitcomb (170, fifth) and Mahlo Clark (205).

Lake City takes on West Valley and East Valley on Wednesday at West Valley High in Spokane.

Post Falls wins at

Sidney Invitational

SIDNEY, Mont. — Roddy Romero (103 pounds), A.J. De La Rosa (138) and Ridge Lovett (145) won their respective weight brackets for Post Falls, which ran away with the team title at the Sidney Invitational on Saturday.

Post Falls won for the third time in four years, finishing with 238.5 points. Tournament host Sidney was second with 194.5 points, followed by Columbia of Nampa — which led after the first day — with 184 points.

“They were all really consistent,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “Roddy didn’t go to this tournament last year and Ridge was Ridge and was really dominant. The champs did a great job, and all those guys that wrestled well did a great job as well.”

Other Post Falls placers were Lane Reardon (third at 120, Isaac Jessen (runner-up at 126), Nick McLeod (fourth at 132), Tyler Morris (fourth at 160), Isaiah Laguna (fourth at 205) and Terran Sharbrough (fourth at 285).

Post Falls visits Lake Cty on Thursday.

Graves, Huber win

for Post Falls 2

POTLATCH — Ryan Graves (106) and Brelane Huber (113) captured individual titles for Post Falls’ “Varsity 2” team at the Dick Griswold Invitational.

Huber defeated Trojan teammate Logan Carrick in the final.

Ethan Miller (138), Johnny Hill (145) and Kaden Mason (195) each placed third for Post Falls, and Avery McSpadden (120), Tristan Shaw (138), Cameron Estes (152) and Keith Meeks (220) all took fourth.

Post Falls finished fourth in the 11-team tournament with 59 points. McCall-Donnelly won it with 81, Orofino had 76, Clearwater Valley 75.

Dylan Sotin (98), Hayden Villa (138) and Caden Hall (195) won titles for St. Maries, which finished fifth with 54 points.
