LEWISTON — Klaire Mitchell had 10 kills and 20 assists as the Lake City Timberwolves, last year’s state 5A runners-up, opened their season with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 victory over the Lewiston Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Booth Hall.

“It was our first match of the season, so there was some nerves in the first game,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “We had some really good defense and blocking, with a lot of touches with the ball at the net. We were very balanced offensively, which was nice to see, with some things to improve on.”

Ashley Kaufman had eight kills and six aces, Reilley Chapman 13 digs and Janae Rayborn five aces for Lake City, which visits Mt. Spokane on Friday afternoon.

Lewiston, in its league opener, is 7-4.

Kelly Horning added 12 kills for Coeur d’Alene (2-1, 1-0 5A IEL). Elli Schrader had seven kills, four aces and three blocks, Sarah Wilkey seven kills and 10 digs, Lauren Phillips 24 assists, five aces and six digs.

“Tonight’s match was a great test of our ability,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We battled through a little bit of adversity and I think that helped us grow as a team. I am extremely proud of our girls.”

Tessa Sarff had nine kills, six aces and four blocks for Post Falls (1-1). Maya Blake added eight kills and 15 digs, Megan Wood eight kills and three blocks, Courtney Finney 21 assists, Kayla Mayo 17 assists, Ali Carpenter 15 digs, Maddy John three blocks.

MOSCOW — Jacob Jenzen scored the tiebreaking goal on an assist from Keaton Murphree in the 75th minute to lift the Timberwolves past the Bears in a nonleague match.

“We didn’t play as much possession as I would have liked, which limited our number of quality opportunities, but all three goals came from well-executed build-up play with a great assist and finish,” third-year Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “Like in the previous game (an 8-0 win over Lakeland on Saturday), we didn’t rely on any one player to provide the goals and we spread the scoring over three different players. It was nice to come away from Moscow with a win, something we haven’t done in either the previous two seasons.”

Spencer Messina had a goal and assist for Lake City (2-0), which hosts Moscow at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex next Tuesday.

First half — 1, LC, Greyden Lee (Spencer Messina), 25:00. Second half — 2, Mos, unknown, 48:00. 3, LC, Messina (Jacob Janzen), 51:00. 4, Mos, unknown, 60:00. 5, LC, Janzen (Murphree), 75:00.

POST FALLS — Zander Moore’s unassisted goal in the 60th minute lifted the visiting Bulldogs past the Trojans in a nonleague battle of young squads.

Moore received a pass just past the center line. A Post Falls defender fell down, and Moore wound up with a 1v1 vs. Trojan keeper Josh Nilson, and beat him with a shot to the far post from just inside the 18-yard line.

Post Falls (0-3) outshot Sandpoint 9-6.

“Obviously we had a lot of chances on goal,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “But Julian (Reichold) is a real good keeper; and we didn’t challenge him like we could half. We had a lot of shots, but most of them were soft.

“It was a pretty even game between two teams kind of in a rebuilding year,” Lawson added. “I think both teams will improve.”

Post Falls travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

First half — none. Second half — 1, Spt, Zander Moore (unassisted), 60:00.

Shots on goal — Spt 6, PF 9.

Saves — Spt, Julian Reichold 5; PF, Josh Nilson 3.

SPIRIT LAKE — Wade Scott scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers past the Cristeros of Post Falls at Timberlake High.

“We dropped our first game to St. Maries (3-2 on Aug. 21) and didn’t play well in that match, so we made some adjustments and it really paid off,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “The boys played really hard and I was pleased with the results and how they responded.”

Timberlake (1-1) travels to Orofino for an Intermountain League match on Thursday.

First half — 1, TL, Wade Scott (unassisted), unknown. Second half — 2, TL, Scott (Kobe Harris), unknown.

Shots on goal — IC 9, TL 11.

COEUR d’ALENE — Madi Lasher scored the lone goal of the match in the 49th minute on an assist from Kali McKelips, lifting the Timberwolves past the Bears at the Irma Andrel Soccer Complex.

“Moscow played with 11 players behind the ball, which is a typical game for a team that didn’t have a plan to attack,” said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti, whose team outshot Moscow 19-1. “We might have had 90 percent of the possession, and they were trying to play a style that didn’t involve attacking, which can be affective to get results. But we got the win, played well and solved the problem. It was hard to put the ball on the frame, but it was a solid win.”

Lake City (1-0) hosts Sandpoint on Friday.

First half — none. Second half — 1, LC, 49th, Madi Lasher (Kali McKelips).

Shots on goal — Mos 1, LC 19.

Saves — Mos, Chloe Baker, 18; LC, Hailey Jo Parks 1.

SANDPOINT — Riley Walkington scored a hat trick for the Bulldogs, who outshot the visiting Trojans 20-1 in the nonleague game.

“The girls ran hard and played a very defensive game,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “We are down several key players due to injuries and it really shows on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully we will be back to full strength in a couple weeks.”

Post Falls plays host to Lakeland on Thursday.

First half — 1, Spt, Riley Walkington (Jordie Breeden), 5:00. 2, Spt, Breeden (unassisted), 7:00. 3, Spt, Emi Lynch (unassisted), 33:00. 4, Spt, Walkington (unassisted), 40:00. Second half — 5, Spt, Walkington (unassisted), 79:00.

SPIRIT LAKE — The visiting Panthers scored four goals in the second half — three coming from Emma Bartlett — to beat the Tigers in an Intermountain League match at Timberlake High.

“This is always an emotional game for us,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “The girls knew what they needed to do and were able to pull the emotional and physical parts of the game together for an excellent showing. The first half, we connected better than we did the previous game, but just couldn’t finish some of those buildups and put them in the back of the net. Timberlake’s keeper (Karissa Willis) had a great game coming out to pressure early and making some big, tough stops on some well-hit balls.”

“They totally took us out of our game,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “They were quicker to the ball and on the field. We didn’t have the same vision as they did, or play up to our potential.”

Next Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0, 2-0 IML) hosts Priest River at Community United Methodist Church Field and Timberlake (1-1-1, 1-1-1) travels to Kellogg.

First half — 1, CCA, Isabella Lucky (Sarah Hines), 3:00. 2, CCA, Hines (Eliason Cherrstrom), 24:00. Second half — 3, CCA, Emma Bartlett (Elizabeth Lehosit), 47:00. 4, CCA, Cali Shipman (Bartlett), 50:00. 5, CCA, Bartlett (Lehosit), 58:00. 6, CCA, Bartlett (free kick), 74:00.

Shots on goal — CCA 14, TL 3.

Saves — CCA, Sandy Faulkner, 3; TL, Karissa Willis, 7.
