Volcanoes rally to avoid Spokane sweep
SPOKANE — On the verge of a five-game sweep, the Indians allowed visiting Salem-Keizer to rally from a two-run deficit, with an unearned eighth-inning run giving the Volcanoes a 3-2 victory Monday night before 4,948 at Avista Stadium.
The Indians (34-36, 18-14 second half) missed a chance to pull even with Vancouver, which also lost Monday night, leaving Spokane a game back of the division lead with six games to play.
Spokane opened up a 2-0 lead behind Curtis Terry’s RBI double in the first inning and an unearned run in the fourth. Starter Seth Nordlin threw five shutout innings before Salem-Keizer tied it in the sixth on Wander Franco’s two-run double.
In the eighth, the Volcanoes had runners on second and third with two outs when a throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Terry and Tanner Gardner continued their hot hitting with two hits apiece for Spokane.
After a day off today, the Indians begin a three-game series at Tri-City at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
