Trojans notch opening win

| August 19, 2018 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — Kaylee Moate, Reagan Hartzell and Kamryn Becker each scored once as Post Falls opened its season with a 3-1 victory over Hillcrest of Ammon on Saturday morning.

Bethany Gilmor added a pair of assists for the Trojans.

“All in all I’m really impressed with how the girls started the season,” third-year Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “We have multiple players that are still below the mandatory 10 days of practice, plus three starters are dealing with injuries. Today we started three freshmen — Emily Ray in goal, Trinidie Nichols as a defensive mid, and Kaylee Moate as the attacking mid. All three did a great job in their first game for Post Falls. The back line was really solid, especially senior Lauren Hoffeld and sophomore Morgan Rust.”

Hillcrest, which lost 8-2 to Coeur d’Alene on Friday, dropped to 0-2.

Post Falls travels to Moscow on Wednesday.

ST. MARIES — Bethan Suchowski scored an unassisted goal in the 25th minute as the Lumberjacks beat the Badgers in the season and Intermountain League opener for both at City Park.

The win was Kenny Osier’s first as coach after taking over for Brad Groce.

“We only had 15 players eligible because of practices, so not all my experienced players were able to play,” Osier said. “We started to spread the field, and then were bunching up. We definitely saw some stuff to work on.”

St. Maries hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.
