Viking boys, girls shine at Strandberg invite

SPOKANE VALLEY — Taylor Dawson won the 100-meter dash in 11.09 seconds, Nate Burch captured the 110 hurdles in 14.61 and Chad Humphreys won the 1,600 in 4:23.30, helping the Coeur d’Alene boys to a fourth-place finish at the Strandberg Invitational at Central Valley High on Saturday.

Lake City’s Grant Clark won the 200 in 22.47.

Coeur d’Alene’s Brooklyn Shell won the 3,200 in 11:44.65, Brooke McClurkin was second in 300 hurdles (46.16), Rylee Brown third in the 400 (1:00.85), Lauren Forster was third in the 800 (2:21.36) and 1,600 (5:13.43), helping the Viking girls finish third.

Lake City’s Keara Simpson was second in the discus (123-3) and Emily Hernandez was third in the shot put (40-8) and hammer (120-4). Lake City’s girls finished fifth.

Lakeland’s Jillian Mael was third in the 200 in 26.40.

Central Valley won both the boys and girls team titles.

Post Falls doubles team finishes fifth at Inland Empire tourney

SPOKANE — The Post Falls No. 3 boys doubles team of Tyler Sterritt and Derrick Luby beat Brenner Haul and Luke Michael of Ellensburg (Wash.) 4-3 (7-5), 4-2 to finish fifth in the Inland Empire tournament at Ferris High.

“They worked real well together and communicated a lot,” Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. “They play different styles, but it seemed to work well for the tournament.”

Matches were moved from Mt. Spokane to Ferris due to rain in the area.

Jason Benton and Matt McLeod, the Post Falls No. 1 boys doubles team, went 0-2 on Saturday and finished eighth.

Post Falls travels to Lewiston on Tuesday.
