Bates, Thompson key Cd'A sweep

| April 29, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The tone was set earlier in the week, then again on the mound all day for Coeur d’Alene in a key 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday.

Justin Bates allowed four hits over six innings in a 3-1 win, then Brady Thompson went the distance in a 4-1 win for the Vikings over the Bengals at Ted Page Field.

“Justin just came out and set the tone, and threw the ball really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “It was just good baseball. He just beared down and got the job done.”

Riley Alley hit a two-run double in the sixth inning of the first game for Coeur d’Alene.

“He just stepped up with a big hit when we needed it,” Mahin said. “We just took that momentum into the second game. Brady told me after the Lake City game (a doubleheader loss on Tuesday) that he wanted the ball, and boy, he had the pitching performance of the year. He had 18 first-pitch strikes and only threw 70 pitches, which was incredible for a seven-inning game.”

Coeur d’Alene (11-8, 5-5 5A IEL) travels to Lake City for a doubleheader on Tuesday to wrap up the league season.

Lewiston, which is 3-7 in league, hosts Post Falls on Tuesday in a twinbill.

Priest River 2-1

SPIRIT LAKE — Seth Villanpando totaled six hits and five runs batted in on the day, leading the Tigers to a sweep of the Spartans in Intermountain League play at Timberlake High.

Due to a rescheduling, Timberlake was the designated visiting team and hit first in the game after the first matchup on April 17 was rained out and moved to Priest River.

Timberlake scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the first game to break open a scoreless game.

“A lot of credit to Priest River’s pitcher (Coal Stevens) for keeping us off balance in that game,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “We just couldn’t find anything and finally started to put some runs together.”

In the nightcap, Jack McDonald pitched four hitless innings for Timberlake, which took advantage of six errors by Priest River to get the sweep. Timberlake finished with nine errors in the twinbill.

“Jack pitched really well behind some sloppy defense,” Knigge said. “That hasn’t been our M.O. this year. Seth hit the ball really well and hit bat was on all day.”

On Tuesday, Timberlake (12-4, 7-1 IML) hosts Bonners Ferry (7-1 in league), with the winner clinching the league title and hosting duties for the 3A District 1 tournament starting May 8. Bonners Ferry won 11-0 and 16-1 at Kellogg on Saturday.
