North Idaho College Spring Jazz Concert

| April 27, 2018 1:00 AM

May 1 marks the date for the North Idaho College Spring Jazz Concert, being held at the Schuler Performing Arts Center in Boswell Hall, at 7:30 p.m.

“You will not want to miss this concert featuring exciting music of Dave Brubeck, Tower of Power, Stephen Sondheim, Ella Fitzgerald and David Bowie,” said NIC Director of Bands Bryan Hannaford.

The concert will begin with Cardinal Vocal Jazz, directed by Max Mendez. Cardinal Vocal Jazz will be performing classics like “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, and Stephen Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around,” with vocal soloist Nick Rusho. A vocal jazz arrangement of “Changes” by David Bowie will be a treat for the audience, as well as an arrangement by our very own Mendez. Mendez arranged “Alright, Okay, You Win” by Maymie Watts and Sid Wyche for student vocalist Vincent Prado.

This will mark the end of Hannaford’s first year leading the Jazz Ensemble. Hannaford has focused on the modern Big Band sound, and many of the charts featured on this concert display funk and Latin grooves that will make the audience want to move.

“You’ll want to get up and dance to the swing stylings of Kris Berg’s arrangement of the Dave Brubeck classic ‘Crescent City Stomp’ along with a couple of highly complex Latin funk tunes, ‘Miami Spice’ by Victor Lopez and ‘Song for Bilbao’ by Pat Metheny,” Hannaford said.

This concert is free and open to the public.
