Post Falls sweeps into tie for first in 5A IEL

POST FALLS — Jacob Rutherford did it with his arm and his bat in the opener, pitching a five-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one, and the Trojans went on to sweep the Lewiston Bengals 4-0 and 8-2 in 5A Inland Empire League play Wednesday.

At the plate, he doubled in the fifth inning and scored on Jake Pfennigs’ double. In the sixth, he hit a two-run double.

“He was on fire,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said of Rutherford, the Gonzaga commit. “He went into the seventh inning with 66 pitches. He was efficient, and pitching to contact — everything you want in a pitcher. And he goes 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs. he had a great day.”

Pfennigs and Quin Bennett also had two hits each for the Trojans (10-8, 5-3 5A IEL).

In the second game, Bennett hit a solo homer, Austin Higgins pitched five strong innings and Brock Zeller drove in a pair of runs.

Lewiston is 3-5 in league.

Post Falls travels to Lake City (14-3, 5-3) on Friday for a 5A IEL doubleheader.

RATHDRUM — Mia O’Hara homered in each game, and the host Hawks went yard four times in all en route to the sweep of the Bears in 4A Inland Empire League play.

In the opener, Taylor Woolley struck out six and allowed two hits over five innings for Lakeland (5-11, 3-1 4A IEL). She also went 2 for 3, scored three runs and drove in one.

O’Hara hit a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Hawks ahead to stay. She finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs and two runs.

Riley Rivera hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game, and finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. O’Hara hit a solo homer and finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Woolley hit a solo homer, and Abbey Leon went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

“We just hit well, and had a lot less errors,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “We played well defensively.”

Lakeland travels to Post Falls today at 4.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kiki Cates of Lake City defeated Rachel Jeske of Coeur d’Alene at No. 2 girls singles in a marathon match which lasted more than 3 hours.

Jeske won the first set 7-6 (4). Cates won the second 7-5, and in lieu of a third set, they played a 10-point tiebreaker, won by Cates 10-5.

Coeur d’Alene girls coach Laura Taylor had praise for the Vikings’ No. 1 mixed doubles team of Kim Gunnerson and Bayley Fromm, who beat Gabe Gates and Madison Morris of Lake City 6-4, 6-0.

“I think they’re jelling,” Taylor said. “It’s nice to see them playing so well.”

Next up is the Inland Empire Tournament in Spokane on Friday and Saturday.
