Gordon A. Pierce, 77

Gordon A. Pierce, age 77, passed away at The Schneidmiller House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on April 20, 2018.

Gordon was born in Avoca, N.Y., on June 29, 1940, to Ernest W. and Betty (Bartlett) Pierce. After high school Gordon attended one year of college at the University of Albany. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a radar operator serving from 1959 to 1964.

After the military he earned his bachelor’s degree in education and industrial arts from Western Washington University, in Bellingham, Wash. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. Gordon graduated from Gonzaga University in 1977 with his MBA, and then from Boston College in 1992 with his Ph.D.

Gordon married Margaret E. Morton on June 17, 1961, in Hornell, N.Y.

He worked for the Telephone Company and City of Spokane in the 1960s and ’70s. Gordon administered the Business and Operations Tax for Expo ’74. In 1978, he went to work for American Sign and Indicator in Spokane. In 1982, he moved to Smithfield, R.I., where he was a professor at Bryant College, teaching business computing. In 1992, he moved to Columbia, Mo., where he taught computer courses at Columbia College. In 1998, he moved to Florida where he worked part time. He then moved to Appomattox, Va. and Bath, N.Y., before moving back to Coeur d’Alene in 2017.

Gordon was a founding member of Covenant United Methodist Church in North Spokane and was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene. Gordon was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Friendship Lodge #7 in Chepachet, R.I. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, woodworking, reading and playing cribbage. He also volunteered at Skyway Elementary and was a substitute teacher at the junior high and high schools in Coeur d’Alene.

He is survived by his daughter, Marcia E. Pierce of Spokane; two sons, Douglas A. Pierce of Coeur d’Alene, and David W. Pierce of Rhode Island; two grandchildren, Kayleigh E. Pierce and Erik G. Pierce, both residing in Coeur d’Alene; and two brothers, Andrew Pierce of Sandy Creek, N.Y., and Jon K. Pierce of Almond, N.Y.

Gordon is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1995; his parents and two brothers, Ernest C. and James F. Pierce.

Memorial services for Gordon will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the Community United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene.
