SANDPOINT — Seth Villanpando spun a three-hit shutout, leading Timberlake to an 11-0 blanking of Sandpoint on Monday in nonleague baseball at War Memorial Field.

Jacob James had two hits and three RBIs, and Logan McDonald scored twice to lead the Tigers (9-4) offensively. It was more than enough run support for Villanpando, who struck out two while letting his defense work behind him.

“Coming out here and pushing through. Everybody played defense phenomenally today,” said Villanpando, who kept things simple and worked ahead all game. “Trying to get the first pitch strike as much as I can.”

Timberlake scored five runs in the second and fifth innings, as the Bulldogs (7-4) had one of those game where nothing went their way. The few balls they hit hard off Villanpando found a defender — often shortstop Darren Mullin or centerfielder Jack McDonald.

“Seth was dealing today,” said Timberlake head coach Cameron Knigge. “It’s nice to pick up a win over a 4A.”

Knigge also praised James for his clutch, two-strike hit in the fifth, which sparked the game-clinching rally.

“He poked a two-RBI single to right field, which is what we tell our guys to do when they have two strikes: shorten up and go the other way,” he added. “That hit sparked a five-run rally in the fifth.”

Sandpoint struggled with walks and hit batters, as the Tigers cashed in the free baserunners with timely hits. It was the toughest game of the year for the Bulldogs, who loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning but couldn’t get on the board and close a 6-0 lead.

“Games like this are a blessing in disguise. You never really know what’s going to happen, and days like this test you,” said Bulldog head coach Chase Tigert. “Timberlake is a good team, I was impressed. They’re well-coached and they executed well.”

Timberlake is at Kellogg today, while Sandpoint hosts Moscow on Thursday in a huge home doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — Shelby Starr went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles, and Becca Malloy tossed a complete game six hitter, leading Timberlake to a 6-3 win over Sandpoint in nonleague softball Monday at Sandpoint Middle School.

Malloy didn’t overpower the Bulldogs (4-8), but she pounded the zone and kept the Tigers (7-2) in a close game to pick up a huge road win.

“She throws a knuckle-change, it’s amazing. Sandpoint had a tough time laying off it, she was hitting her spots,” said Tigers head coach Casi Reisenauer, also lauding the play of Starr. “That kid is just automatic. I can always count on her to hit the ball hard.”

Ember Dewey, Brooklen Steiger and Bri Baldree all had diving catches to highlight a strong defensive showing, and Baldree and Bri Barlow each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams liked what she saw from her team in defeat, including the pitching of starter Audrey Mattila and Baldree.

“We played more like a team today than we have all season. Today we meshed, we’re starting to come together,” Hawkins-Williams said. “I had two pitchers that pitched efficiently and had good command of the zone. Defensively, we made a lot of diving catches, really showed up.”

Timberlake hits the road again today, traveling to Kellogg for an Intermountain League contest.
