| April 24, 2018 1:00 AM

The first 15.5-mile relay and run suicide awareness event hosted by the Life Awareness Community Coalition will be held on Saturday, June 2.

The event through the Lakeland Joint School District will start at Timberlake High in Spirit Lake and end at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.

Cost is $40 for individuals and $60 for relay teams. Teams of four or two and single runners can register at schools in the district or at www.active.com. There is also a free 1-kilometer kids fun run.

The race will start at 7 a.m. and kids fun run at noon.

Those interested in volunteering should email Lacc272volunteers@gmail.com.

The event will feature a student art show. The artwork with the words "Let Your Words Be Life" by first-place winner Alexandra Peightal, a freshman at Timberlake, will be on the race T-shirts. All artwork submitted to a contest will be displayed and sold in a silent auction at the event.

There will also be community resources, vendors, music and food court.

A group of staff, parents and patrons in the Lakeland district are assisting with the event.

Teams and individuals need to supply their own transportation.

There will be prizes for the school that gets the most participants, best costume and the top individual finishers and relay teams.

Idaho in 2015 had the fifth-highest suicide rate in the country. Suicide was the second-leading cause of death for Idahoans ages 15 to 34 and for males up to 44.
