LEWISTON — Another twinbill.

Another 5A Inland Empire League split for Lake City and Lewiston.

Lake City won the opener 7-3, before Lewiston held off the Timberwolves 7-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game, William Mayo scattered six hits for Lake City (12-3, 3-3 5A IEL). Bennett Cunningham had a two-run single to highlight a four-run fourth inning the broke the game open. Kodie Kolden went 2 for 3 and scored twice.

“William pitched a heck of a game in the first game and really kept Lewiston off balance,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “We played good defense behind him. He just gave us a solid outing.”

In the second game, Dawson Bonfield hit a two-run double as Lewiston (11-6, 3-3) scored five runs in the top of the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead.

Zach Sensel hit a two-run single for Lake City in the bottom of the fourth, and Bridger Rinaldi’s two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth that pulled the Timberwolves within a run.

Lake City left two runners on in the sixth. In the seventh, Rinaldi was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game at 7. Lewiston held on for a 7-6 win as Lake City left eight runners on base in the nightcap.

“We kind of dug ourselves a hole and misread a couple of pop-ups and gave them six outs instead of closing out the (fourth) inning,” Manzardo said. “The kids fought back. We had many opportunities to get within one, but just couldn’t get the big hit. We had our chances, but didn’t capatalize on the chances we had.”

Lake City travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday for a 5A IEL doubleheader.
