Lakeland battles back to earn split

RATHDRUM — After Bri Baldree had a big game for Sandpoint in a 14-2 game one win, Lakeland bounced back for an 18-9 victory in the nightcap and a split of their 4A Inland Empire League softball doubleheader.

Baldree struck out five and scattered three hits in the opener for Sandpoint (4-7, 3-1 4A IEL), and also went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Bri Barlow went 2 for 3 and scored four runs for the Bulldogs, who totaled 15 hits in the opener. Audrey Mattila was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

In the second game, Riley Rivera hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Lakeland (3-11, 1-1), and Taylor Woolley hit a two-run shot in the sixth. Abbey Leon went 3 for 4 with three runs, and Mikayla Olson and Allison Russum each had three hits.

Baldree went 5 for 5 and scored three runs in the second game for Sandpoint. Tanis Davis went 4 for 5 and scored three times.

“We cleaned up our errors, and hit well the second game,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “Whereas the first game we came out to play to not lose. We struggled with Baldree the first game. Sandpoint hits really well; they were hitting a lot of gaps (in the opener).”

Lakeland is next scheduled to play host to Post Falls next Thursday.

POST FALLS — Reilly Williams, Jalyssa Beamer and Ashley Kaufman hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the fourth inning of the first game, powering the visiting Timberwolves to a 5A Inland Empire League sweep of the Trojans.

Williams finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the opener for Lake City (11-2, 4-0 5A IEL). Emma Gray was 3 for 3 and scored twice.

Kaufman pitched four no-hit innings and struck out three in the opener.

In the second game, Ashlynn Allen hit a three-run homer in the second inning for Lake City. Williams added a two-run shot in the fourth, and Abby Jankay hit a solo homer in the seventh.

Kyndra Hans went 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the third inning for Post Falls (4-8, 1-5).

“The weather was great, and we finally got to play some league games,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “We do have things we need to clean up, but I believe we are continuing to grow, and I think we will peak at the right time.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Becca Malloy drove in 10 runs on the day as the Tigers celebrated their first games of the season on their home field with an Intermountain League sweep of the Wildcats.

Malloy struck out five and pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener for Timberlake (6-0, 3-0 IML), and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bernie Carhart went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs for the Tigers, and Shelby Starr was 2 for 3 and scored three runs.

In the second game, Malloy went 3 for 5 with eight RBIs and five runs scored. Kyndal Lindley drove in four runs, Maddy Salois was 3 for 4 with a solo homer, three RBIs and three runs scored.

“Our defense played a lot better than the previous day (in a 12-9 win over Priest River), Timberlake coach Casi Reisenauer said. “We made a lot less mental mistakes, and it was nice being our home field.”

In the last two days, Timberlake played as many games (three) as the Tigers did in the first 40 days of the season.

Timberlake travels to defending state champion Bonners Ferry on Saturday for an IML twinbill.
