Darrel ‘Dick’ Ward, 93

Darrel “Dick” Ward died Friday, April 13, 2018, at age 93, in Spokane, Wash. He was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Bismarck, N.D. to Albert Eugene and Alice Felicia Lash Ward, the fifth child of seven. His education was in North Dakota and after finishing high school in three years, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight in World War II. He served as an infantry scout from 1943 to 1945, in the New Guinea Campaign.

When Dick returned to Spokane, he met Erma Louise Oldenburg at a dance in Spokane. He decided this was one lady he wanted to get to know better. To court Erma, he enrolled in trade school in Spokane. After graduating from trade school, Dick worked as a journeyman in Spokane until he earned his electronic technician certification.

Dick and Erma were married in Clarkston, Wash. on Nov. 6, 1948. In 1951, Dick bought an existing business and renamed it Lake City Radio and TV on East Sherman in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and in 1988 they retired and closed the business.

He is survived by his wife, Erma Oldenburg Ward and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Albert and Alice and siblings, Melvin Ward, Bette Bell, Arthur Ward, Donald Ward, Doug Ward and June Clary.

Viewing will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on April 23, 2018, with services at noon, at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S. Pines Road, Spokane Valley, Wash. Following a short graveside service adjacent to Pines Cemetery, a late luncheon will be served at the Thornhill Valley Chapel.

Memorial donations may be given to the Coeur d’Alene Union Gospel Mission or the National Alzheimer’s Association for Alzheimer’s Research.
