POST FALLS — Tanner McCliment-Call went 4 for 4 and drove in three runs as Post Falls beat Lake City 8-4 in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader Wednesday at Post Falls High.

In the second game, Kyle Manzardo went 2 for 2 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning as Lake City (11-2, 2-2 5A IEL) won 5-4 for the split.

McCliment-Call hit an RBI single in the fourth inning in the first game, and added a two-run single in the fifth.

Manzardo went 3 for 3 in the opener for Lake City, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Post Falls (6-8, 1-3) loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. Manzardo came on in relief and retired the next two bases, but Jake Pfennigs followed with a three-run triple to center field to pull the Trojans within one. Manzardo walked the next batter, but struck out the following hitter to end the game.

“We battled, but didn’t play good baseball all day,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “One thing I appreciate about these kids is they grind the games out. We fought through some adversity and got a close win that’s going to help us down the road. Kyle had a great day at the plate with a home run in each game and Kodie kept us in the second game on the mound. We didn’t have much momentum today at all, but Post Falls played really well.”

“It’s a tough league,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “Especially after dropping two heartbreakers to Coeur d’Alene. It was good to get that first win, but know we should be able to play with everyone in the league. I was happy with our approaches at the plate and we played some pretty good defense.”

On Friday, Lake City hosts Lewiston in a 5A IEL doubleheader. On Saturday, Post Falls is home vs. Coeur d’Alene in a pair of league games.

“Our pitching performance was pretty solid, but we’re like everyone else,” St. Maries assistant coach Shannon Pooler said. “We saw some good things, but don’t want to use the weather as an excuse. We’ve got to fight through it and get better each game.”

St. Maries is scheduled to travel to Orofino on Friday for a single game, then return home for a doubleheader on Saturday against the Maniacs starting at 2 p.m.

Lewiston 4-5

Coeur d’Alene 1-1

COEUR d’ALENE — The Bengals swept the Vikings in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Larry Schwenke Field.

“We had tough defense today and not hot bats,” Coeur d’Alene coach Lindsie Scholwinski said. “This game is by inches and I know the scoreboard said we got beat today, but we learned a lot. We’ll execute the little things and we hope to have more timely hitting next time.”

Coeur d’Alene (3-9, 3-3 5A IEL) hosts Sentinel and Big Sky of Missoula on Friday.

Lewiston is 2-2 in league.

Timberlake 12

Priest River 9

PRIEST RIVER — Bernie Carhart hit a three-run triple to spark the Tigers past the Spartans in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.

“It was kind of like starting the season over again,” Timberlake coach Casi Reisenauer said. “We kind of talked before the game, and knew we were going to have some errors and some mistakes. We just needed to get outside and get on the dirt. We battled, and I liked that Bernie pitched well. It took a while to get our bats going, but we started to string some hits together.”

Shelby Starr had four hits, Rebecca Malloy, two hits and Madison Salois had two hits — including a two-run home run — for Timberlake (4-0), which hosts Kellogg in a doubleheader today starting at 3:30 p.m.

Grangeville 3

ST. MARIES — In their first game since St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), the Lumberjacks shook off the rust thanks to a three-run double by Elizabeth Ragan in the third inning to beat the Bulldogs in the Central Idaho League opener for both at City Park.

“It’s been a crazy season,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “It’s been a battle to fight the elements. We’ve had a good couple of scrimmages against the JV, but that’s about all we’ve gotten out of it. Our first game (against Priest River), it seemed like everything was clicking, but you could tell there was some rust. We played well, but there was a lot of rust.”

“I was impressed with Chris,” O’Connor said. “He had to battle and make some adjustments for a good win. You could tell we hadn’t been on the court for a few days. Hitting was an issue at times, but they kind of figured it out by the end of the matches.”
