| April 15, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The fifth inning was good to the Coeur d’Alene Vikings on Saturday.

Coeur d’Alene scored five runs in the fifth inning of the first game to rally past visiting Post Falls 7-5 in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League-opeing doubleheader at Ted Page Field.

The Vikings then scored four runs in the fifth inning off Oregon State signee Jake Pfennigs in the second game, and three more in the sixth to break a 7-all tie, en route to a 10-7 victory and the sweep.

“We were having good at bats the whole game against Jake,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Our game plan was to have quality at bats and get his pitch count up. Our whole philosophy is united we grind, and they really bought in, and the game rewarded them.”

In the opener, Coeur d’Alene trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Carter Friesz led off with a double and scored on Jayce Bailey’s two-run homer. Levi Haen singled, and scored on a single by Quinton Bunch to pull the Vikings within one run. Jack Bloom singled, and Noah Mayfield’s two-run single scored Bunch and Bloom and put Cd’A ahead to stay.

Bailey hit a solo homer in the sixth.

In the second game, Haen’s RBI single in the sixth broke a 7-all tie.

Caleb Beggerly’s two-run homer capped a four-run fifth as the Vikings broke a 3-all tie.

But Quin Bennett of Post Falls answered with a grand slam in the sixth to tie the game at 7.

“Even when Quin hit that grand slam, we knew we were going to come back, and we did,” Mahin said.

Brady Thompson drove in three runs, two on a third-inning double.
