Lake City High School students perform 'Hamlet'

COEUR d’ALENE — Described as “the ultimate English language play ever written,” Shakespeare’s “Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark” opened Thursday and will be performed this weekend and next by Lake City High School’s Troupe de Wolfe theater group.

The story details Hamlet’s return home after receiving news of his father’s death. Things have changed, and while struggling to make sense of the new order, Hamlet faces a crossroad. He can consent, or rage against the injustice around him.

“One of the reasons we come to the theater is to recognize ourselves. Hamlet is an enduring character because people from all walks of life, of all ages and nationalities, have recognized their essential humanity in him,” said a news release. “Shakespeare’s language is electrifying. He manages somehow to articulate thoughts we all recognize as truth, but we ourselves have not been able to express. We hope our performance will convey that sense of emotional, intellectual, and unequalled homecoming to our audience.”

The play is adapted and directed by Sandy Seaton, resident Theatre Arts teacher at Lake City High School. The creative team includes: Todd Jasmin (Fight Choreography), Kyra O’Reilly (Stage Manager), Mallory Patton (Assistant Stage Manager), Marisa Butler (Set Design), Cheyenne Miller (Costume Design), Michael McGiveney (Light Design), Sam Selby (Assistant Light Design), Ashley “AJ” Duce (Property Design), Nina Judd (Sound Design), Malachi Tran (Makeup Design), Sarena Kaschmitter (Hair Design), and Gavin Reasor (Technical Director).

The cast features: Evan Schwaab as Hamlet, Sam Selby as Claudius, Ricki Fehrenbacher as Gertrude, Jeffrey Parsons as Laertes, Sebastian Goetz as Horatio, Hannah Goodwin as Ophelia, Nikki Reason as Marcellus, Gavin Reasor as Bernardo, Marisa Butler as Rosencrantz, Chloe Flechsing as Guildenstern, Darian Juvan as Osric and Todd Jasmin as the Ghost and Gravedigger. The ensemble features Lily Keller, Ally Dean, Anthony Kirby, Theodore Smith and Parker Henley.

Hamlet plays in the Lake City High School Theatre, 6101 N. Ramsey Road, today, Saturday and April 19, 20 and 21.

Curtain time for all shows is 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $5 to $8. All student prices are $5.

“We encourage all local educational theater and high school English departments to bring groups of students,” said the news release.
