Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls split in softball

POST FALLS — Natalie Sell struck out eight in a complete game win for Coeur d’Alene in a 5-3 win over Post Falls in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools on Wednesday.

Post Falls won the nightcap of the doubleheader, which was rained out last Saturday, 6-1 to earn the split.

Coeur d’Alene (1-7) and Post Falls (4-4) will meet again on Saturday in another doubleheader starting at noon at Coeur d’Alene High.

“I’m proud of them and how they focused on the little things today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Lindsie Scholwinski said. “We looked like a different team today. It was a solid turnaround, and boosted the confidence of the players. I couldn’t be more proud of them. We were in the second game the entire time, but had a couple of untimely errors and need to clean those up. But I’m nothing but proud of them.”

Kyndra Hans had two hits, including a solo home run in the opener and Hans, Lexi Demute and Kahlea Dumas had two hits each for Post Falls in the second game.

SANDPOINT — Lakeland’s Jillian Mael won the 100- and 200-meter dash in a Inland Empire League meet featuring Sandpoint, Lakeland, Lake City and Post Falls.

Summer Kastning had wins in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for Lakeland.

Emily Hernandez of Lake City won in the discus and shot put.

PULLMAN — Kyla Currie shot an 82 for the shorthanded Timberwolves, who claimed the Palouse Invitational at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

“Our girls played really well,” said Lake City coach Corey Owen, who had a player unable to play due to illness. “Our No. 3 girl called a half hour before the bus left and wasn’t going to make it, so all of our scores counted. The pressure was on them, and they played great. It was challenging conditions, but the girls battled hard today. I’m proud of them.”

Sammi Dement shot an 84 for Lake City, which won with a 380.

Hannah Larson shot a 97 to pace Post Falls, which finished second with a 390.

“It was the first time these four girls have played together, and I was impressed with their consistency,” Post Falls assistant coach Karl Sette said. “We’ve got high hopes for the rest of the season.”

Richland’s Macy Robertson shot a 78 to earn medalist honors.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Timberwolves swept in boys singles and Taylor McKenzie rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win in girls singles to play to a tie with the Bulldogs.

McKenzie rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win 10-8 as the Bulldogs won five of six girls matches.

Lake City is scheduled to visit Lewiston and Moscow on Saturday.
