Lake City baseball shuts out Lakeland

| April 10, 2018 1:13 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting helped the unbeaten Lake City baseball team shake off the rust of a two-week layoff, as the Timberwolves topped visiting Lakeland 10-0 in five innings on Monday.

Brandon Gay and Brennan DeBoer combined on a three-hit shutout for Lake City, while Bridger Rinaldi and Kyle Manzardo combined for 4 hits and 7 RBIs. Manzardo knocked in Bennett Cunningham, then was driven home by Rinaldi to put the Timberwolves (9-0) ahead for good in the first inning.

“I thought Brandon Gay pitched really well for the first three innings, and Brennan DeBoer threw really well in relief,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “We made the plays we needed to make on defense and had some timely hitting.”

Kodie Kolden added a triple and 2 RBIs for Lake City, which hosts Cheney on Thursday.

Logan Siegford had a double for Lakeland (7-6), which travels to Post Falls on Thursday.

Lewiston 7, Coeur d’Alene 5

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings won three out of five girls events and swept the Bengals in mixed doubles Monday in a Inland Empire League match originally scheduled for Saturday.

While Madi Whittemore dropped a tough three-set decision to Lewiston No. 1 singles player Audrey Parkey, Coeur d’Alene received singles wins from Christina Hellwig and Rachel Jeske to defeat Lewiston in singles for first time in a while, CHS girls coach Laura Taylor said.

“I was really happy with my singles players. All three played well — Madi beat (Parkey) in three sets down there, and she won in three sets here. It was quite a battle,” Taylor said.

The Viking boys had a tough time against a strong Lewiston team, coach Dan O’Connor said. Both CHS doubles teams lost in three sets.

“Our boys doubles were pretty close ... I’m pleased with how both doubles teams played,” O’Connor said. “Kim Gunnerson and Bailey Thom had a big win for us in mixed doubles.”

The Vikings are tentatively scheduled to host Moscow at 3 p.m. Wednesday in a rescheduled match.

Courtney Finney and Sherry May Espina won their singles matches in straight sets, and Pete Gobin earned a 6-0, 6-2 win in boys singles for Post Falls.

“Despite limited practices due to weather, Courtney came out and played a consistent and tactical match. She overcame nerves and early pressure to dictate the pace of play and made a number of well placed shots. I was very proud of her composure,” Trojans coach Kirk Hartzell said.

“Pete Gobin made his season debut after a year in Montana; he and his family have returned for his senior season and his presence helps bolster a lineup that has a number of first-year starters,” Hartzell added.
