Silverwood cancels annual fireworks show

| April 9, 2018 5:28 PM

Silverwood Theme Park announced it has canceled its Fourth of July fireworks show.

The theme park's annual fireworks extravaganza, with patriotic music, has been well-attended for at least 20 years, but concerns about it taking place during wildfire season prompted park officials to err on the side of caution.

“We understand that our community looks forward to this event every year, but after some deliberation, we have decided that, due to safety and environmental concerns, it is in our best interest to cancel the show indefinitely,” said a news release. “The fire season has had a huge effect on the surrounding areas the last few years, and if something were to happen during our show it would be devastating to our community.”

A 2015 fire near Bayview burned roughly 1,300 acres of forested land on Cape Horn Peak. Nine homes and five other minor structures were destroyed.

Silverwood will still be in full operation and decorated for the holiday.

Guests with RV Park reservations for the Fourth of July who would like to move their reservations to a different date are asked to call Silverwood's Guest Relations Department at 208-683-3400 ext. 0 for assistance.

“We look forward to a great 2018 season and hope that our guests can still come and incorporate Silverwood into their holiday tradition this year and for many years to come,” said the news release.

Silverwood, north of Coeur d'Alene in Athol and the Northwest's largest theme park, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
