Today's ghastly groaner

| April 8, 2018 1:00 AM

The revolutionaries had imprisoned another nobleman, this time a count. He was awaiting execution, after having refused, under duress, to reveal information that the revolutionaries required to locate and capture the remaining aristocrats. Despite their best efforts, the count’s lips had remained sealed. “I will never tell!” he shouted again and again. As he was being strapped to the guillotine he was asked for the last time to give up his noble family and friends. Once again, he repeated to his captors, “I will never tell!”

Just as the blade was released and fell toward his neck, he underwent a sudden change of heart, and screamed, “I’ll tell!” But by then it was too late. The blade fell, decapitating him. The executioner was heard to remark, “Well, that just goes to show, never hatchet your counts before they chicken.”
