Lake City boys, Cd'A girls up to the Challenge

- TRACK AND FIELD

SPIRIT LAKE — Grant Clark had wins in the 100- and 200-meter dash, as well as in legs of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay for the Lake City boys in the third Kootenai County Challenge at Timberlake High on Friday.

Lake City edged Post Falls 100-97 for the boys team title.

Tyler Trengove had wins in the high jump, long jump and triple jump for Post Falls.

Lauren Forster won in the 800 and 1,600 for Coeur d’Alene’s girls, who beat Lake City 99.33-93.33 for the team title. It was the second straight girls title for Coeur d’Alene at the meet, which features 5A schools Coeur d’Alene, Lake City and Post Falls, as well as 4A Lakeland and 3A Timberlake.

HAYDEN — Carter Friesz went 4 for 5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs, Noah Mayfield drove in four runs and the Vikings beat the Knights in a nonleague game moved to the field in Hayden on Honeysuckle Avenue, just off Government Way.

Caleb Beggerly hit a grand slam in a nine-run first inning for the Vikings, who have outscored their opponents 39-10 in their last three games.

Mayfield and Jayce Bailey also homered for Coeur d’Alene.

“We had some great at-bats today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “All in all, we played a great baseball game today.”

Levi Haen and Quinton Bunch scored two runs each for Coeur d’Alene (6-3), which is scheduled to host Cheney today at Ted Page Field at noon.

Zach Mackimmie struck out four over three innings and Colt Rowley fanned two in an inning of relief for Coeur d’Alene.

“Zach threw the ball really well, same with Colt,” Mahin said. “Both were efficient with their locations.”

OROFINO — Seth Villanpando had five runs batted in for the Tigers in the first game of a nonleague sweep of the Maniacs.

“Seth did very, very well today,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “He really stepped up today. All our seniors (Dustin Smith, Jacob McDonald and Jacob Privitt) stepped up and produced today.”

Darren Mullin went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored in the second game as Timberlake rallied to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Alex Drake earned the save in the second game for Timberlake (3-3), which is scheduled to host Kellogg next Saturday in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.

“Alex really stepped up and pitched great in the seventh,” Knigge said. “He really earned his varsity spot today.”
