HUNT: Do your research

| April 6, 2018 1:00 AM

I just had published in the Coeur d’Alene Press my adventures while on a “guided” hunt that details a bad experience on a guided hunt. Let me set the record straight.

First this hunt took place a number of years back and was not in Idaho. Where it was and how long ago does not matter. I stated in the beginning of the story that “it was my fault,” and it was. Here is why. I did not do even the least amount of research into the credentials of this outfitter. I did not ask for references. I did not take any actions that would have prevented these circumstances from happening. None.

The outfitter in this adventure is no longer in business. So, additionally, let me say that in my hunting experiences in several states, I have encountered outfitters in the area where I was hunting and the outfitters had been in their territories for years and were highly respected and the majority of their business was from returning clients or referrals.

Personally I have high respect for these hardworking businessmen. They work hard to maintain their good reputation, are good stewards of the wildlife and the wilderness. They and their employees work long — very long hours and the pay isn’t the greatest. They earn their money. And in spite of these circumstances I always wanted to be a camp cook in one of their remote camps.

So, please know that my experience was my fault. Hiring one of these professionals could lead to one of the best experiences you can have.

Do your homework and you will be a happy camper.
