MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

Virginia Daly

100th Birthday

April 2, 2018, will be Virginia (Berry) Daly’s 100th birthday.

Virginia and her twin brother, Virgil, were born in Palouse, Wash., on April 2, 1918. They were the youngest of four children of Jess and Vesta Berry. They joined older sister Zelva (Berry) Brockham and older brother Archie Berry.

She attended school in Palouse and graduated high school in 1935. She went on to attend Washington State University and Eastern Washington University, where she earned a degree in education.

Her first teaching job was at a one-room, two-teacher school in Viola, which was east of their home ranch, where she lived with her brother, Virgil, who was running the family farm. Her next teaching jobs were in Naches and Tacoma, Wash.

In 1942, She went to work for the U.S.O. Travelers Aid in San Francisco, where she assisted World War II military families on the move. She married Jim Daly when he was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 21, 1946. They moved to Jim’s hometown of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he went to work for the U.S. Veterans Administration. The couple had three children: Kathy (Daly) Reed, Mike Daly and Jo (Daly) Smith.

When her three children were school age, Virginia began teaching again at Hayden Lake Elementary School, as well as Central school in Coeur d’Alene. In 1962, when the VA office closed in Coeur d’Alene, they transferred to Boise, where she continued to teach from 1962 to 1974. She retired after 30 years of teaching when Jim transferred to Seattle. Once he retired, they moved back to Hayden Lake.

Virginia has been blessed with three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will be having an open house from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2018, at North Star Retirement Community, 3240 W. Seltice Way, Coeur d’Alene.
