COEUR d’ALENE — Genesis Prep is primed for a good season in 1A Division II — the smallest of Idaho’s six classifications.

Against the 5A Coeur d’Alene Vikings — in Idaho’s largest classification — it was just a little bit of a tall task on Tuesday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

Rey Louden had 21 points, seven rebounds and six steals as the Vikings beat the Jaguars 53-35 in the season opener for both schools.

“We really put a lot of pressure on them early on and got out to a lead after the first quarter,” said Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Nicole Symons, whose team hit four 3-pointers in the opening quarter. “We kind of came out of the half kind of slow, but were able to get some more pressure on them in the second half.”

Bella Murekatete had 20 points and Josie Scribner added eight for Genesis Prep.

“They never quit playing hard,” Symons said of Genesis Prep. “Their point guard (Rachel Schroeder) and Bella are a good 1-2 punch. They played really hard for (first-year Genesis Prep) coach (Brandon) Haas. They’ll do really well this year and have a great season.”

Coeur d’Alene hosts Richland on Friday.

Genesis Prep travels to Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., next Tuesday.

POST FALLS — In somewhat of a track meet with basketballs, the host Trojans got 25 points from Melody Kempton and 16 from Bayley Brennan in a nonleague victory over the Tigers from the Greater Spokane League.

“Both teams wanted to run,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “I didn’t think we played well offensively, and I looked up and we had 84. We didn’t execute real well in the first half, and we had 43.”

Brennan also had seven assists, Jenna Gardiner five steals for Post Falls (2-0). Allert also praised the play of senior post Sydney Parks, who had 11 points and six assists, many of those on high-low passes to Kempton.

Post Falls had 25 assists on its 32 field goals.

Dominique Arquette scored 15 points to lead four Lewis and Clark players into double figures. The Tigers made 11 of 22 3-pointers.

“They’ve got shooters,” Allert said. “They spread you out, and they were making their shots.”

ST. MARIES — Alena Davenport had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Lumberjacks, but Eastern Washington signee Grace Kirscher hit a jumper with 4.5 remaining to lift the Bulldogs to a nonleague win.

“I thought the girls played extremely well, but we had too many turnovers,” said St. Maries coach Jay Sines, whose team had 32 turnovers on the night. “We were lucky to be in the game. We shot the ball really well and had some sick girls that gave it their all. Kirscher scored pretty much at will, but she’s a good ballplayer. I was impressed with how our kids played. They fought hard.”

Kaylee Auer had nine points and nine rebounds and Paige Sines 10 points and five assists for St. Maries (2-2), which travels to the Lake City JV on Thursday.
