MEYER: Here's to you
Judy Meyer just announced she is resigning from the North Idaho College Board of Trustees. Let’s get the disagreement out of the way first.
Judy Meyer has also served faithfully for many years as an unpaid Community Library Network board member. The board of five members decides the taxes that we are assessed for the library’s services. Every year since at least 1995, the library has asked and received the maximum 3 percent tax increase, plus the amount of growth in the community. In the last several months, the board, with Judy’s approval, again approved that increase for fiscal year 2018.
I think the library board has done a fair job of taking care of the library and a very poor job of taking care of the taxpayer. By way of comparison, if I remember correctly, the city of Coeur d’Alene, which supports the much-celebrated Coeur d’Alene library, decided to not take the 3 percent increase for 2018 and hasn’t taken the full 3 percent for years.
Having said that, Judy deserves praise for her many years of service in so many areas. I have always found her to be kind, generous, humble, respectful and on top of all that, she has a good sense of humor. She was always civil to people she disagreed with. She has so many qualities that have made her service to our community valuable. We are a better place because of her. We should all say, thank you!
So, if I could pick one person to drop in unannounced for Thanksgiving dinner, would it be one of the many people I know who agree with me politically, or would it be Judy Meyer? I would pick Judy.
