Dvorak, Hovde, Auer pace Cardinal women to win, 3-0 start
- WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
COEUR d’ALENE — North Idaho College outscored Bellevue (Wash.) College 29-16 in the third quarter to break a halftime tie, en route to a 90-77 victory Sunday at Rolly Williams Court and a 3-0 showing in the season-opening Tip-Off Classic.
Former Lake City standout Cierra Dvorak had 24 points, eight assists and seven steals for the Cardinals. Sydney Hovde added 19 points and Kelsey Auer, the St. Maries High product, had nine points, nine rebounds and three steals.
“It was a grit victory,” said NIC coach Chris Carlson, whose team was playing for the fourth time in four days (including a scrimmage). “Sydney Hovde was awesome around the basket, and we put her at the head of the press (in the second half). We just trapped the ball right away, and it made them throw it around.”
Sierra Cole scored 21 points, Molly Dixon 20 for Bellevue (2-1).
NIC returns to action Dec. 1-3 at the Bulldog Classic in Bellevue, Wash.

Meyer, Swift second
at Spokane Open
SPOKANE — Trey Meyer (165 pounds) and Jacob Swift (174) each finished second for the Cardinals at the Spokane Open at the Spokane Convention Center.
Jason Holmes (125), Blake Beard (141), Brent Evans (149) and Trysten Perales (184) all placed fifth for NIC, after winning in the match for fifth and sixth place.
Cooper McCullough (157), Thomas Stevenson (157) and Hudson Mauseth (174) all were given sixth-place finishes, since they had already wrestled the maximum six matches on Sunday, and couldn’t wrestle in the match for fifth and sixth. McCullough and Stevenson were slated to square off in the match for fifth and sixth.
“The guys wrestled pretty well; a lot of them got six matches, which is what we wanted,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “It was a pretty good bounceback from our sickness last week.”
Meyer went 3-1, losing 12-7 in the finals to ex-Cardinal Tyler McLean of Simon Fraser in the finals. Swift went 4-1, pinned in the finals by Blake Cooper, a national champion at Warner Pacific two seasons ago.
Three NIC regulars didn’t compete Sunday — Esco Walker (125) and Diego Nunez (133) due to illness, as well Damian Trujillo (285), whom the Cardinals are awaiting results of an MRI on his knee.
Following the Thanksgiving holidays, NIC heads to Las Vegas for a pair of duals on Nov. 30, followed by the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 1-2.
