COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Lana Berg gave North Idaho College the lead for good late in overtime, scoring on a layup in the final moments as the Cardinals beat the Northwest College Trappers 67-64 in a nonconference game at Rolly Williams Court on Friday afternoon, giving coach Chris Carlson his 300th win at the school.
“It was a great, great first-game win,” Carlson said. “Lana had a couple of baskets for us down the stretch and some nice finishes down low and just played really tough for us.”
Berg finished with 17 points and six rebounds for NIC in a reserve role. Rocky Mountain College transfer Ronnie Harris had 14 points, six rebounds and four steals and Lake City High product Cierra Dvorak 13 points, six rebounds and five steals in the win.
“Our sophomores stepped up,” Carlson said. “They played with a lot of experience. Northwest, you’ve got to hand it to them, they’re a good national JUCO (junior college). They’re a good team and we started to execute a little bit and really got some nice defensive stops at the end.”
NIC hosts Southwestern Oregon tonight at 8 p.m.
Northwest, which beat a group of North Idaho All-Stars on Thursday, drops to 4-3.

COEUR d’ALENE — In a battle between two powerful wrestling programs, the Cougars used two key pins to outscore the host Cardinals at Christianson Gym.
“It was an exciting dual,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “That’s probably who we have to go through to win a national title.”
Among the highlights for NIC were wins at 149 by Brent Evans and at 125 by freshman Esco Walker, who defeated Clackamas’ David Walker, last year’s runner-up at nationals, in a 5-4 decision.
“That was a great win for Esco,” Whitcomb added.
The Cardinals host dual meets at 1:30 and 3 p.m. today, then compete in the Spokane Open tournament on Sunday at the Spokane Convention Center.

COEUR d’ALENE — It took a while for a roster filled with new players to mesh, but a strong second half helped the host Cardinals overtake Northwest College of Powell, Wyo. at Rolly Williams Court.
“It was our first game of the year and they’re a strong, national JUCO team,” NIC coach Corey Symons said of the Trappers. “It’s one of the tougher nonconference games we’ll have, so it was a big win for us.”
Freshman point guard RayQuan Evans — one of 12 new players for the Cardinals — had a solid debut, scoring 31 points while adding seven rebounds and seven assists.
And fellow freshman guard Milan Lester gave NIC a spark in the second half, Symons said. The hosts trailed by 10 points when Lester went on a personal 8-0 run.
“He came in, scored eight straight points and really helped us gain the momentum,” Symons said of Lester.
The two teams square off again at 11 a.m. today on Rolly Williams Court.
