Cardinals fall at Simon Fraser

| November 11, 2017 12:00 AM

BURNABY, British Columbia — In wrestling, each point matters, no matter if it’s by pin, decision or technical fall.

Unfortunately for North Idaho College, it was the 12 points on forfeits that the squad couldn’t get back.

Due to illness and injuries, NIC had to forfeit at 141 and 149 pounds, allowing Simon Fraser to capture a 27-19 win.

“The guys that competed wrestled really well,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “Cooper (McCullough) had a real gutsy win and Hudson (Mauseth) got a big win. Trey lost to (former NIC wrestler) Tyler McLean, but it was a real good match and a confidence builder with three takedowns in the final period. You just can’t spot a team 12 points, but it was a good match. We never like to lose, but the guys battled hard.”

NIC competes in the Pacific Open on Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.

125 — Esco Walker, NIC, md. Oscar Bulaqui, 15-3. 133 — Riley Prough, SF, p. Diego Nunez, 3:45. 141 — Cruz Velasquez, SF, by forfeit. 149 — Nick Reyes, SF, by forfeit. 157 — Cooper McCullough, NIC, d. Cody Osborne, 15-14. 165 — Tyler McLean, SF, d. Trey Meyer, 9-7. 174 — Hudson Mauseth, NIC, d. Logan Nelson, 4-3. 184 — Levi Perry, NIC, p. Nolan Badovinac, :54. 197 — Morgan Smith, SF, p. Christian Grover, 3:19. 285 — Damian Trujillo, NIC, d. Nishan Randhawa, 7-6.
