CLARKSTON, Wash. — Jackson Sumner struck out six and Riley Alley hit a three-run homer in the first game for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in a 5-4, 3-2 sweep of the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies of Meridian on Friday in the North-South tournament at Clarkston High.

“Jackson threw great today and Riley had a big hit for us in the fourth to get us going,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “We just played really good baseball with timely hitting and pitching.”

Trevor Luckey hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game for Coeur d’Alene (4-1), which faces Mountain View today at 10 a.m., and Clarkston at noon, with both games at Clarkston High.

“We made a few mistakes, but did a great job for not being outside much,” Mahin said. “It was a really good game for us. All 14 innings against Rocky Mountain were extremely competitive. But we fought hard to the end and did a great job of grinding it out.”

RATHDRUM — Jared McDaniel singled to score Joe Strietzel with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Hawks, in their season opener, rallied from 9-0 down to beat the Eagles at Gorton Field.

“West Valley came out hitting the ball really well,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We told our players not to get down and stay relaxed. Our plan was to just start chipping away the best we could. We knew we had a lot of at-bats left.”

Lakeland scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning and three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 10, keyed by a leadoff home run by Max Baker. Lakeland’s JJ Mackesy tied the game on a sacrifice fly to score Andrew Neilson.

“I was so proud of how our players kept fighting,” Bradbury said. “They never got down, and just kept working all game long. West Valley is a really good team and well coached, so it was great to come out of it with the win tonight.”

Lakeland is scheduled to host Coeur d’Alene on April 4.
