An 86-year-old Cocolalla man died in a one-car crash Friday afternoon on U.S. 95 near Athol, Idaho State Police reported.

A 1996 Ford Taurus station wagon driven by James W. Brown was traveling north at 4:42 p.m. on U.S. 95 near milepost 449 when, for an unknown reason, it left the road and veered onto the left shoulder, police reported.

Brown struck the end of the guardrail, lost control of the vehicle and it came to rest on the right shoulder near the concrete barrier, police reported. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene; his passenger, Patricia E. Brown, 84, of Cocolalla, was uninjured.

Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
