Heber Augustus (Shep) Shepherd, 86

Shep was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Minnie Wolfe and Heber Shepherd. He was raised in Park City, Utah, until the family moved to Corning, Calif., in 1947 where Shep joined the Navy in 1948 at the age of 17.

He did his training in San Diego, Calif.; after boot camp he boarded the USS Springfield, a light aircraft cruiser, where he toured the Far East. He came back to the United States in 1949 and was stationed in San Francisco, Calif., and boarded the USS Mt. McKinley AGC-7 in 1951. He was also on the USS Princeton in 1956 until 1957 when he left the Navy. He was stationed in Korea, Japan and China. After nine years in the Navy, he was honorably discharged in 1958, then went on to join the United States Air Force in 1958. He was an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist) in the Air Force and retired after 12 years of service in 1968.

Shep met and married his wife of 65 years, Rowena Shepherd, while on leave; and the two of them had five boys, Jim, John, Jeff, Jerome and Jerald Shepherd. After retiring from the Air Force in 1968, he joined the Solano County Sheriff’s Department as a Correctional Officer from 1969-1978. In 1978, they moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he joined the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department from 1978-1987. He then retired and focused on his favorite hobby of woodworking in his shop. He loved to build things for his friends and family.

Shep is preceded in death by many and survived by his wife, Rowena Shepherd; his five boys: Jim, John, Jeff Jerome and Jerald Shepherd; many brothers and sisters; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A viewing will be 9 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2801 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, with a funeral service following at 10 a.m. A graveside service with military honors at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens will commence after the funeral.
