Grove comes up short

in bid to qualify for PGA

SUNRIVER, Ore. — In good shape at the turn, North Idaho College men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove ran into some trouble on the back nine Thursday in the final round of the PGA Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort.

Grove went 7 over on his final five holes -- three double bogeys and a bogey -- and shot 43 on the back for a final round of 8 over par 80.

Grove, who previously played at Coeur d’Alene High and the University of Idaho, finished tied for 46th in the tournament at 7 over par.

The top 20 finishers qualify for the PGA Championship on Aug. 10-13 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C.

Eight players tied for 19th at 3 over par.

Grove birdied the first hole Wednesday, but doubled the fourth and went out in 37. He shot a 1-over-par 73 in the third round after shooting a 70 on Sunday and 71 on Monday.

Omar Uresti won the tournament, beating Dave McNabb in the second hole of a playoff after both finished at 4 under par.

Last week, Grove won the Oregon Open Invitational at nearby Redmond, Ore.
