Joseph Dennis Barrett, 76

Joseph Dennis Barrett, 76, passed away June 1, 2017, in Post Falls, Idaho. He was born Oct. 8, 1940, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Evelyn and Clifford Barrett. He lived in Southern California for the first 65 years of his life.

In 1961, he and Marilee married and would have celebrated 56 years on July 8, 2017. He joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and worked jail duty and radio car in Temple City Metro. He became a Sergeant and finished his career as a supervisor at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He retired in August 1998 after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marilee; three sons, Sean of Worley, Idaho, Patrick of McKinney, Texas, and Tim of Hendersonville, Tenn.; two daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Jill; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Noel, Alina and Aiva of Ventura, Calif.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 2004. He is a member of the St. Maries Elks, and The Owls, which is a retired law enforcement organization.

His hobby was cooking chili competitively all over the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He was the 1999 Chili Verde World Champion in the International Chili Society.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Yates Funeral Home, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene.
