SPOKANE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen dropped a pair of games on Sunday and settled for fourth place at the Warehouse Classic at Gonzaga Prep.

The Lums lost 3-0 to the Spokane Cannons in the semifinals, then fell 4-2 to the Spokane Expos in the third-place game.

In the third-place game, Brett Stapleton of Coeur d’Alene (5-5) walked to lead off the sixth, and scored on a passed ball to tie the game.

The Expos took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth on an error, then Austin Tomlinson hit a two-run double.

The Lums got a run back in the top of the seventh when Riley Alley walked and scored on the fourth straight walk issued by Expos pitching. Coeur d’Alene had the bases loaded with one out, but left the sacks loaded.

“We probably gave away three runs on throwing errors,” Lums coach Kevin Dunton said.

In the semifinals, Coeur d’Alene outhit the Spokane Cannons 6-2, but left eight on base.

Brett Keesee had two hits for the Lums.

Left-hander McKabe Cottrell of the Cannons, who has signed with Gonzaga, struck out nine, and Corey Wagner hit a two-run single in the third inning.

Tanner Mueller of the Lums gave up two hits over six innings, walked three and struck out three.

“I think Tanner out-pitched him,” Dunton said. “The one hit was a timely hit, but he shut them down the rest of the game. I like the way we swung the bats; we just couldn’t put any runs on the board.”

Coeur d’Alene plays at Prairie on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Post Falls High in a class AA North Idaho League game.
